£400K for Marketing programme welcome – Maeve McLaughlin MLA
February 21, 2013
Sinn Féin MLA (Foyle) has welcomed the announcement by Tourism Minister, Arlene Foster of £400,000 for Market Derry Campaign during the year of Culture.
Maeve McLaughlin said:
“I have been lobbying the Minister for a number of years, for funds to market Derry as the tourism gateway to the North West. As the Sinn Féin spokesperson on Tourism during my time on Derry City Council (DCC), I made it a priority issue to ensure that Derry and the North West received proper consideration and resources from NI Tourist Board (NITB).
“Last year DCC submitted a business case to Minister Foster for a £1.3million programme to promote the Region in order to garner the maximum potential from the City of Culture celebrations. This business case now needs to be delivered on and DCC must maintain the pressure to ensure that it is.
“There is a strong perception, not without foundation, that the Minister’s and NITB focus is on projects like the Titanic Quarter in Belfast and the Giants Causeway with areas West of the Bann only peripheral to their thinking.“The announcement today of £400,000 is very welcome and I hope that it is just the first tranche of the expected £1.3million. I now look forward to the roll out of a robust advertising campaign that will attract thousands of visitors to our region to enjoy all of the magnificent cultural, theatrical, musical and sporting events planned for 2013 and beyond.”
