Sinn Féin spokesperson on Environment, Community and Local Government Brian Stanley TD has invited the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association to Leinster House for a cross party presentation this Wednesday, 27 February.
Speaking today Deputy Stanley said;
“We are only weeks away from the start of the turf cutting season and the government has failed to resolve the issue on a number of the bogs that are designated special area of conservation by the European Commission. It is vital that progress is made on this issue.
“Four turf cutters are facing are court in Loughrea on March the 6th. This is a result of an incident in Clonmoylan bog in summer 2012. We must, and can, avoid any further confrontation during the coming turf cutting season. But it requires a concerted effort by government to have meaningful engagement with the Turf Cutter and Contractors Association to work through all the issues.
“Sinn Féin has been involved in a number of initiatives to try and progress this issue including a productive meeting with Alan Seatter, Deputy Director General of the European Commission.
“I am delighted to have both Tom Ward and Michael Fitzmaurice, chairperson TCCA speaking on Wednesday. This presentation is an opportunity to hear at first hand the solutions being proposed by the turf cutters themselves.”
The Turf Cutters and Contractors Association proposal’s for the National Raised Bog SAC Management Plan presentation will take place, Wednesday, February 27th 5pm, AV room, Leinster House.
