Public health should not be treated as a commodity – Sue Ramsey
Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey said it is extremely concerning if money is being made on the back of ill health within the community.
The West Belfast MLA and chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee was speaking after it emerged that the health department has paid some £130million in the last three years to private healthcare companies.
The Sinn Féin MLA said:
“The issue of waiting lists is one that has to be dealt with but we need to ensure that there is efficiency when it comes to spending public money.
“The cancellation of clinics and appointments is a worrying factor as the public could be paying twice for treatment. If there are people unscrupulously making money on the backs of ill health then that needs to be challenged.
“The health of the public is not a commodity and should not be treated as such.”
