Minister stresses the importance of reading for children

27 February, 2013 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Fein MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has stressed the importance of reading in the early years of a child’s life.

Speaking ahead of taking part in an event to mark World Book Day at Drumlin's Integrated Primary School the West Belfast MLA said:

“World Book Day provides an excellent opportunity for all of us to raise the awareness of the importance of reading in a child’s development and in expanding their horizons.

“Young children are naturally inquisitive and have a thirst for knowledge from a young age. It is essential that all of us, whether we are parents, carers, teachers, whatever, must all be involved in ensuring they have access to reading material.

“When children read and learn about other people from different cultures it helps them understand and respect diversity in a simple way. Events such as World Book Day can play an important role in involving schools and parents and carers to use books in a fun and interactive way.”
