Minister welcome’s strategy to improve the lives of people with disabilities
February 28, 2013
Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has welcomed the strategy to improve the lives of people with disabilities in the North.
Speaking ahead of the launch of the Disability Strategy today the West Belfast MLA said:
"I would like to commend everyone who has contributed to the development of this strategy, especially those from the disability sector.
“Almost one in four people here have some form of disability and almost two in every five families have a family member with a disability.
“All of them make a valuable contribution to society and it is important that we tackle the barriers and obstacles they face.
“It is also important to remember that disability not only effects the individual but has an impact on their family, carers and friends.
“This Strategy commits the Executive to ensure that people with disabilities have the same equal rights as those who do not have a disability.
“It also commits to deliver practical support and services and tackle social exclusion so that a person’s life chances and equality of opportunity are not constrained by their disability.”
