Senator David Cullinane has welcomed today’s announcement that 1,600 jobs are to be created by the Glanbia Ingredients Ireland in Belview, on the Waterford-Kilkenny Border
Speaking today from Leinster House, the Waterford senator said: "The South East has levels of unemployment at 25% above the national average, and has suffered a number of significant job losses in recent years. Therefore, such a significant jobs announcement is very welcome news.
"Glanbia Ingredients Ireland Limited is Ireland’s leading dairy ingredients company, processing 1.6 billion litres of milk or 30% of Ireland’s milk pool into a range of dairy ingredients for export to more than 50 countries.
"This is a significant investment in the Irish Dairy industry and it is vote of confidence in the South East that it is being located there. This investment draws on the strengths of the region and underlines the fact that the region can be a world leader in dairy and food production.
"It will create employment opportunities which will take in a wide range of skill sets and will have an enormous and positive knock on effect for local agriculture, as 90% of GIIL’s milk outputs are domestically sourced.
"The 450 construction jobs in developing the plant is also to be welcomed, as well as the indirect effect this will have on the local economy.
"This is evidence that the pressure being put on the government and on employment and enterprise bodies is working, and this jobs announcement is reward for the efforts of the public in highlighting the challenges facing the South East."
