Pride Talkback event an opportunity to talk equality

2 July, 2013 - by Caitríona Ruane

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane welcomed the fact that all the main parties were represented at the Pride Talk Back event in Belfast tonight.

 Ms. Ruane said,

“I think it is an enormous step forward to have all the main political parties present at the Pride event tonight as this would not have happened a few years back.

“As an Irish Republican I look to the 1916 Proclamation as the template for equality as it says ‘to cherish all the children of the nation equally’.  Nowhere does it say we must treat gay children, black children, Traveller children or disabled children differently and that was the message I took to the event.

“Equality threatens no one and marriage equality is a right all couples should have regardless of gender and I would ask all the other parties to support marriage equality the next time it comes before the Assembly.

“I would like to thank Pride for putting on the event and for persevering for years to get a full political panel that allows for proper debate and discussion on equality and other issues that effect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.”
