Sinn Féin Social Protection spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has contested Minister Joan Burton's claim that unemployment fell significantly this week and Ireland is in recovery.
Speaking today Deputy Ó Snodaigh said;
“We all want to hear good news but the Minister’s claim that unemployment fell by 7,700 this week is complete fiction. The figure has more to do with emigration and people returning to education than it has to do with jobs.
“Speaking at a press conference yesterday the minister said ‘Ireland is now firmly in recovery mode’. Regretfully this is not the case. Our situation remains critical and is better described by a line in today’s OECD report on the Irish Economy. The report states that ‘unemployment remains high, emigration has resumed, and poverty has increased, adding to heavy debts and financial distress’.”
