Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has described the rationalisation of Community Welfare Officers services as another Labour Party cutback to rural communities.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh raised the issue in the Seanad last night.
Speaking afterwards he said;
“This cut will affect the least well off the most and will impose extra expense on rural people who find themselves in difficult circumstances already.
“Services in Galway are being centralised in Galway and Clifden. With little or no public transport to bring people to these centres this move will struggle to travel to these centres particularly those with children.
“I am calling on the government to review this decision as it is inequitable, unfair and affects rural people disproportionately. It is simply another Labour Party cutback to rural Ireland.”
