Speaking following the publication in-depth research on emigration by UCC’s Émigré Project, Sinn Féin Midlands North West European candidate Matt Carthy said that research was further proof that austerity was not working. He went on to say it was time to end complacency on the emigration crisis.
Matt Carthy said
“Today’s publication of research from UCCs Émigré project on emigration confirms that austerity isn’t working. It shows that emigration is having a devastating impact particularly in rural communities – this is a real problem across the Midlands Northwest Constituency. The fact that so many young people see no future in Ireland is an indictment of the failed politics of politics of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael who have pursued the policies of austerity regardless of the human, societal and economic cost.
“It is time to end the complacency on emigration. The emigration crisis will worsen if next month’s budget is another austerity budget. Budget 2014 must focus on stimulating the economy and investing in jobs creation and in particular in tacking youth unemployment. We must give young people coming out of education a future in Ireland. We need their skills and potential if we are to get out of recession and build a strong, sustainable and innovative economy.”
