Sinn Féin Justice and Equality Spokesperson, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has said that the lessons must be learned from the debacle over recent days that led to two Roma children being removed from their families.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said:
“Last night I called on the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter and the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald to refer these two case to the Garda Ombudsman and Children's Ombudsman respectively. It will be vital to have all of this reviewed independently.
“I welcome confirmation that the Children's Ombudsman will now be asked to review these cases but I also believe that there is a role here for the Garda Ombudsman.
“There are serious lessons to be learned for the Gardaí, the HSE and some sections of the media.
“The Gardaí and the HSE have a crucial role to play in child protection but the law must be applied equally to all families regardless of their ethnicity or nationality.”
