Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has said that he is concerned that after a decline in road deaths in recent years that the trend is on an upward course again.
Relating to figures that show there has been an increase in road deaths in comparison to last year the Sinn Féin Environmental spokesperson said:
“I am concerned that after several years of declining numbers in deaths on our roads this year has seen an increase.
“It is important that we examine the reasons behind this increase and work towards restoring the downward trend of recent years.
“I intend to raise the issue at the Environment Committee and see what measures the Minister intends to take in order to reverse the trend.
“It is also important that we use cameras to target areas where there has been a series of accidents in order to reduce them rather than in areas where they are seen as revenue raisers only.
“It is also important that we educate drivers not to speed, use drugs or drink and drive so that we make our roads safe for all users.”
