Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed the announcement by the Health Minister of the inquiry into child exploitation but called for more detail on its scope and powers.
The Foyle MLA and chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:
“While the announcement of this inquiry is welcome the minister needs to let the public know what its terms of reference are.
“This needs to be an independent, expert-led inquiry and it is crucial that it has the power not only to investigate but to address the failures that have occurred. If organisations were mandated to act in 2011 and they didn't, then they need to be made accountable.
“This inquiry must ensure first and foremost that our young and vulnerable children and youth are not put at risk again. It must be robust with proper independence, powers to investigate and accountability mechanisms.”
