Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon Sinn Féin TD Sandra McLellan called on the government to release funds to meet its commitment to end long term homelessness and rough sleeping.
Deputy McLellan said;
“Tánaiste, the Programme for Government commits to ending long term homelessness and the need to sleep rough.
“Following the tragic death of a man in Dublin’s Phoenix Park it is clear that tackling homelessness remains a key challenge for Irish society.
“There are reports of huge increases in homelessness, particularly in Dublin.
“The Government has cut €233 million from the social housing budget since taking office.
Councils do not have the funds or the houses to prevent people sleeping rough.
“When will adequate funds be released to meet the Programme for Government target and ensure that nobody is forced to sleep rough?”
