Sinn Féin MLA Rosie McCorley has welcomed the report into Irish boxing, which said there was no need for a separate federation to administer boxing in the North.
Ms. McCorley stated,
“While the report highlighted incidents of sectarianism and racism within boxing, it also stated that there was no need for a separate federation in the North of Ireland.
“’Sectarianism and racism have no place in our society and this includes sports. I am sure that the Irish Boxing Federation will look at implementing any recommendations that eradicate inequality from the sport.
“I also recognise the right of people to declare themselves Irish or British under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement and fulfil their sporting aspirations under these terms.
“The sport of boxing has grown considerably and the standard of Irish boxing is world renowned, I am sure that this will continue. Boxing has helped many young people to instil discipline into their lives and allowed them to make a better contribution to society, something which we have all benefited from."
