Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan has welcomed the announcement that the UN has declared 2014 "Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian people".
Mr. Sheehan stated,
“The Palestinian people have suffered immense oppression from the Israeli state. The building of a wall around Gaza has created the largest prison in the world and controls in and out of the West Bank have allowed conditions to deteriorate with the residents are denied humanitarian aid such as medicines and basics like water and electricity.
“The system of apartheid is alive today in the state of Palestine and I welcome the news that the United Nations have deemed 2014 "Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian people”.
“The United Nations have in the past few years designated a international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people so it noteworthy that he vast majority of delegates have voted to extend this into a year of solidarity.
“This nomination will heighten awareness of the problems that besiege the Palestinian people and help put pressure on the Israeli Government in developing a peace process that will allow the Palestine people freedom with dignity and equality.”
