Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Ferris TD, has asked Minister Simon Coveney to extend the South West herring fishery period by a week in the New Year.
Deputy Ferris said:
“The people trying to make their living there are not large operators. They need every day’s fishing they can get. This week is an evaluation week, when they cannot fish.
“They are left with two weeks more, one of which is Christmas week when the markets and the factories are closed.
“I am calling on the minister to extend the period by a week in January to compensate those fishing the area. It makes sense.”
