The West Belfast MLA said:
“Education is crucial to improve awareness of the rights of people with disabilities.
“Disability impacts not just the individual, but the family, the carers, the wider circle of friends, relatives and co-workers who are often taken for granted.
“We must do everything in our power to ensure everyone can lead independent lives whether that is at school, work or as part of their social life.
“This resource pack has been piloted with 400 schools and will form an important part of the education process of our children and young people whether it is in the school or youth group setting.
“By working together to increase awareness of disability and make sure children and young people have positive attitudes to disability, we can create a more equal and a more caring community.
“I am confident this resource pack for teachers and youth workers will
help raise awareness of the rights of people with disabilities through the Citizenship Curriculum.”
