Speaking after Enda Kenny’s televised statement last night, Sinn Féin’s spokesperson for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Ferris TD, said that the Taoiseach is divorced from the reality of life in rural Ireland.Deputy Ferris said:
“Maybe the Taoiseach is protected by his many handlers from contact with real people, but to say that we are out of the woods is a gross exaggeration. Those of us from rural Ireland know the reality of unemployment, emigration, and the growing isolation of rural communities.
“We have fewer schools, post offices and garda stations, while every small town and village is scarred by boarded up windows of shops and businesses which have closed down.
“Wake up Taoiseach! Rural Ireland is suffering greatly from your austerity policies and no amount of spin will change that. What this economy needs is stimulation, not austerity.”
