Taoiseach has not met trade union leaders since taking up office – McDonald

17 December, 2013 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Fein Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has expressed her shock at the Taoiseach’s revelation in the Dáil this evening that he has not met with trade unions leaders since taking up office in early 2011.

Speaking from Leinster House, Deputy McDonald said:

“It beggars belief that the Taoiseach has not met with trade union leaders since taking up office nearly three years ago.

“It is reasonable to expect that the head of government would take a proactive approach to engaging with workers and their representatives, even more so when unemployment remains at a record high whilst general terms and conditions for workers are being eroded.

“When we take the Taoiseach’s admission with Labour’s failure to progress the Programme for Government commitment to introduce collective bargaining it becomes even more clear who wears the trousers in the coalition’s relationship.

“Is it any wonder that those in and out of work have little confidence in the litany of hollow economic plans offered up by this government?”
