Gerry Adams calls for release of Margaretta D’Arcy

18 January, 2014 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has called for the immediate release of writer and peace activist Margaretta D'arcy.

D'arcy (79) who suffers from cancer, was convicted in relation to trespassing on the runway at Shannon Airport in protest at the use of the airport by the US military en route to wars in the Middle East.

Mr Adams said:

“Margaretta D’arcy should be released immediately. She is not a criminal and poses no danger to the public.

“Jailing an elderly person, with Parkinson’s disease, who uses a Zimmer Frame and who is receiving treatment for cancer, is not something that any reasonable person could view as being just.

“Successive governments have failed to inspect any planes in Shannon and have allowed the continued militarisation of a civilian airport.

“Rather than addressing these issues, the state has focused its efforts on arresting and jailing a 79-year-old woman.

“I am calling for the Minister for Justice to ensure the immediate release, on humanitarian grounds, of Margareta D'arcy."
