Speaking today at a protest outside Leinster House, Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartiagh called on the Tánaiste to put pressure on the government to release Margaretta D’Arcy.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore is guilty of the most appalling hypocrisy.
“Before he entered government and became Tánaiste, Eamon Gilmore repeatedly spoke about the lack of inspections at Shannon Airport and voiced concerns about potential violations of human rights.
“For example in 2006 in reference to a Council of Europe statement he noted that the European Convention on Human Rights can be violated through a failure to act.
“Later the same year he sought assurances that the Irish Government was going to begin inspections at Shannon.
“Since taking office the Tánaiste and the Labour Party have switched sides. Whereas once they could legitimately have been considered human rights activists, since taking office they have become complicit in facilitating the mobility of state terror.
“Eamon Gilmore knows that the imprisonment of Margaretta D’Arcy is an affront to international human right and to the legitimate right to protest.
“As Tánaiste he is in a position to rectify this travesty and to bring pressure to bear on the Government to immediately release her.”
