Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has accused the Government of incompetence and of ‘ad hoc-ery’ in its handling of the announcement of the review of Eirgrid’s pylons plan.
Teachta Adams said:
“When I raised this issue with the Taoiseach during Leaders this morning he was less than forthcoming about whether the north south interconnector is included in the review of the expert panel announced yesterday.
“When pressed further by me during Order of Business the Taoiseach confirmed that the inclusion of the north south interconnector was not part of the decision taken yesterday by the cabinet and it seems that he has asked Minister Rabbitte to consult with the chair of the expert panel about this.
“It would also appear that a lobby from Fine Gael TDs, worried by the electoral fallout of the omission of the north south interconnector, has moved him belatedly to seek its inclusion in the review.
“This is not the way to run a government or to deal with an issue as controversial and as critical to the future economic development of the island as the Eirgrid proposals.”
