Commenting on the tragic deaths of babies at Portlaoise Hospital, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:
“The revelation that staff at Portlaoise raised the alarm and wrote to Brian Cowen and Mary Harney about their concerns about obstetric care as far back as 2006 is alarming. It is appalling that these concerns were not acted on.
“As parents have stated, they have been treated disgracefully, being kept in the dark about how and why they suffered their tragic losses.
“The HSE had admitted serious failings in these tragic cases and this underlines the absolute need for full openness and transparency in the investigation of exactly what happened and why it happened.
“The HSE's own inquiry report should be published. There must also be full accountability for those who may be found responsible, both individuals and systems, and everything must be done to ensure that there is no repetition of such failings.”
