Vital that voices of older citizens are heard – Jennifer McCann

5 February, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said it is important that we increase understanding of the issues affecting older people in society.

Speaking at the launch of the NICOLA research project at Riddle Hall in Belfast the West Belfast MLA said:

“It is important that we recognise the rights of our older citizens and value the contribution they make to society.

“We must also listen to their concerns and increase the understanding of the issues that directly impact on their lives.

“Health care, community safety, fuel poverty, transport and access to benefits are the issues that have been highlighted time and time again by older people themselves.

“People are thankfully living longer and by sharing their experience and skills, older people can and do support and sustain a strong sense of community.

“Every effort must be made to enable people to live healthy, active and fulfilling lives. All of us must work together to ensure ageing is a positive experience for everyone.”
