Full text of the speech delivered, at the Ard Fheis, by Senator David Cullinane regarding the Grid Link Project
I want to begin by commending communities the length and breadth of the Island who are standing against plans to impose on them 400KV overhead power lines with 45metre high pylons.
Over 30,000 submissions were made to Eirgrid on opposing the Grid Link Project.
The vast majority are against Eirgrid’s plans to impose on communities unsightly pylons.
Sinn Fein is in favour of Ireland being Energy Independent.
We are in favour meeting its renewable energy targets.
We are in favour of greater use of renewable power and of clean and green energy.
However we stand with communities against plans to extend our national grid and blight our landscape with unsightly pylons in order to export power.
Eirgrid’s plans will see a devaluation of the value of land, pose potential health risks, blight our landscape, damage tourism and our built heritage.
Eirgrid must cease its plans and go back to the drawing board.
The Irish Government must set up a truly Independent Commission to carry out a cost benefit analysis on under grounding the cables.
They must stand with communities and listen to their genuine concerns
