Paschal Donohue must be upfront with the Irish people on GM maize - Boylan

11 February, 2014 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Sinn Fein Dublin candidate for the European Elections Lynn Boylan has called on Minister Paschal Donohue to make clear his position on the genetically modified crop Maize 1507.

Today, The European Council will vote on whether or not to permit the cultivation of the crop. Minister for Europe, Paschal Donohue has refused to say how he will vote.

Boylan said:

“Minister Paschal Donohue must stop hiding from the Irish people on this issue. This is an insult to the electorate. Fine Gael and Labour promised us political reform. Where is the transparency in the minister's actions?”

"There are serious concerns regarding the impact this crop could have on insect pollinators that are very important to food production and biodiversity.

“As a result of the declared voting intentions of the larger countries, Minister Donohue's vote is crucial. The people of Ireland deserve to know if he is going to put Ireland's biodiversity and agriculture first or instead prioritise the profit margins of Multi-National Corporations."
