Stanley: Leaks caused by water metering will cost millions

11 February, 2014 - by Brian Stanley TD

The Sinn Féin Spokeserson on the Environment Brian Stanley TD has claimed that the installation of water meters will lead to leaks that will cost millions to repair.

He was speaking at a meeting of the Environment Committee which hosted the Managing Director of Irish water John Tierney this afternoon.

Deputy Stanley said;

“We already have a situation in Dublin where the installation of water meters has led to a significant number of leaks. This has imposed a cost on the local authorities concerned, despite an assurance from Irish Water that the private contractors concerned would be liable for repairs caused by the installation of meters.

“The Department of the Environment has refused to pay out any further money in repairs caused by metering in Dublin, so it is not clear who will pick up the tab. By my estimation, if the level of leaks caused so far is replicated across the state we will be looking at a final bill for repairs of between €18 and €20 million.”
