Taoiseach fails to set record straight on Ombudsman - Adams

12 February, 2014 - by Gerry Adams TD

The Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams TD has again called for an independent inquiry into the controversy surrounding the alleged bugging of the Office of the Garda Ombudsman.

Gerry Adams accused the Taoiseach of undermining the Garda Ombudsman Commission by continuing to misquote the Garda Siochána Act of 2005.

Teachta Adams said:

“Under the existing legislation the Ombudsman is not required to report to the Minister for Justice but the continued misquoting of the Act by the Taoiseach, and the manner in which GSOC was called in by the Minister has given the impression that the Ombudsman broke the law and did something wrong.

“This undermines the independence and integrity of GSOC. I am disappointed that the Taoiseach did not take the opportunity I gave him to set the record straight in the Dáil today.”
