Mortgage holders must be protected from private debt companies – Doherty

13 February, 2014 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty has welcomed a commitment from Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore this morning that IBRC mortgage holders will be protected.

The Tánaiste gave the commitment in response to Deputy Doherty’s queries in the Dáil this morning.

Speaking afterwards he said;

“I welcome today’s commitment from An Tánaiste that Minister Noonan will deal with the protection of the IBRC mortgage holders.

“The Sale of Loan Books to Unregulated Third Parties Bill needs to be fast-tracked but in the meantime Minister Noonan should spell out what steps he is planning to protect the mortgage holders before that Bill comes in.

“This is a bigger problem than just the IBRC mortgage holders. The Bank of Scotland is close to selling off its loan book to an unregulated company and action is needed to protect the rights of mortgage holders too.

“Sinn Féin has raised this issue with Minister Noonan a number of times and we will be ensuring that the government follows through on this commitment.”
