Need for partnership to help our older citizens – Jennifer McCann
Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann highlighted the importance of Community Safety for older people when she launched the Active Ageing Strategy at Belfast City Hall.
Condemning the robbery of elderly sisters Mary and Eileen Kelly from South Belfast the West Belfast MLA said:
“Wednesday night’s despicable robbery of elderly sisters Mary and Eileen Kelly highlights once again the need for partnership in working to tackle crime on the elderly.
“Crime was an issue that was raised by many older citizens during consultations with them when we were formulating the active ageing strategy.
“Fuel poverty, access to health and other services and independent living were also areas of concern.
“Our older citizens make a valuable contribution in all areas of society. Improving the lives of our older people and protecting their rights has to be a priority for us all.
“It is vital that we work in partnership to ensure our older citizens are valued and supported to live actively and to their fullest potential with their rights and dignity protected.”
