Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín used question time in the Assembly to ask the Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Investment Arlene Foster an urgent oral question on the collapse of KPL contracts.
Mr Ó hOisín said,
“While I welcome the fact that the Minister has moved swiftly to set up a benefits clinic on Wed 26th Feb from 2pm in the Elk Inn at Toome to give advice to those people who have been made redundant I am disappointed that she has stated that all contracts will now have to be renegotiated.
“I would encourage all those who were made redundant from KPL to attend the benefit clinics as people may be unsure what they are entitled to. There will also be experts on hand to advise people in setting up their own businesses.
“I am however disappointed to hear that all contracts that KPL held will now have to be retendered as not only will this delay any attempt for the workers to get back into employment but it limits the ability of a rescue deal for the profitable parts of the company.
“It is my belief that there is interest from several people of looking to rescue parts of the company yet this statement today from Minister will not be encouraging for a rescue deal.
“Our focus must now be getting the 202 people who were made redundant at the weekend back to work and securing the future of small sub contractors before we have a knock on effect and further redundancies.”
