Sinn Féin MLA for west Belfast Fra McCann has raised concerns regarding the discontinuation of the Warm Homes Scheme.
McCann said this scheme which, over this past number of years has
helped local people avail of advice and assistance towards
weatherproofing and insulating their homes, will be a loss
Speaking today Mr McCann said:
“The warm homes scheme was an effective programme aimed at reducing energy costs and insulating many peoples homes.
we see that such a successful scheme is to be discontinued. This is at a
time when fuel poverty and the need for people to reduce costs and
effectively heat their homes is rising.
“We need to place an
emphasis on such schemes as it helps at a number of levels. The scheme
itself creates employment, it helps reduce the ever-increasing fuel
bills and is environmentally sound.
“We need clarity from the
minister for Social Development as to why this scheme is being brought
to an end. Is it being moved into the remit of the new council
structures and why are we not strengthening schemes such as this?
we need is one scheme in place to do this work across the board – not
11 separate schemes under the new councils, causing duplication and
extra costs that could be invested into the delivery of Warms Homes.”
