Sandra McLellan TD, Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Arts, Heritage, Tourism & Sport, has today demanded extra resources for local drugs task forces to implement local alcohol strategies.
Raising the issue in the Dáil, Deputy McLellan said:
“The forthcoming Public Health (Alcohol) Bill must provide adequate funding and resources to Local & Regional Drug Task Forces, including my own Southern Regional Drugs Task Force to implement alcohol strategies.
“A majority of Irish people are concerned about Ireland’s harmful relationship with alcohol and we believe that the Government must take action to protect the health and wellbeing of the public.
“Task forces are required to implement local alcohol strategies while their funding continues to be cut. It was cut by a further 3% in the recent budget.
“To expect task forces to tackle the alcohol problem with diminishing resources is totally unacceptable.”
