Government must respect Seanad vote on upward only rents

26 February, 2014 - by David Cullinane

Sinn Féin Group Leader in the Seanad David Cullinane has welcomed the passing of the Upward Only Rent Bill in the Seanad this afternoon.

The Government was defeated in the Seanad by one vote.

Senator Cullinane said the government must respect the outcome of the Seanad vote and take this issue more seriously.

He said;

“Both government parties agreed pre-election that the issue of upward only rents should be addressed. It was also a key commitment in the programme for government.

“Since then the government has dragged its feet on this issue and has been busy making excuses for its inaction.

“In the meantime upward only rents has been crippling many businesses and has forced many to close with the loss of many jobs.

“This issue must be addressed and the passing of this bill in the Seanad is a step in the right direction.

“I am calling on the government to respect the will of the Seanad and have the bill debated in the Dáil.”
