27 February, 2014 - by Cathal Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín has welcomed the announcement by Minister Carál Ní Chuilín of a mandatory catch and release for salmon and sea trout and a ban on salmon and sea trout netting starting this Saturday.

The East Derry MLA who is also chair of the all-party group on angling said:

“The Minister has clearly taken this decision in the interests of preserving both salmon and sea trout stocks for future generations.

“This is a challenge for all those interested in protecting those fish stocks and making sure we pass on healthy and sustainable rivers and waterways for those that come after us.

“Not only is angling the biggest sport in the world but it is also a major draw in attracting tourists to Ireland so it is in everyone interests that the long term future of angling is protected.

“Anyone that has the genuine interest of angling at heart will understand why the Minister had to take such action and she deserves credit for making that decision.”
