Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Seán Crowe TD, and Sinn Féin European Parliament candidate for Dublin, Lynn Boylan, met with a high level ANC delegation from South Africa today.
The delegation included Jessie Duarte, who is the ANC’s Deputy Secretary General.
Speaking after the meeting Deputy Crowe said:
“We warmly welcomed our ANC comrades to Dublin and we had a very engaging discussion on a wide variety of political and economic issues.
“Sinn Féin has very deep and close historical ties to the ANC and meetings like this help us improve our working relationship, as well as inform ourselves on on-going developments in our respective countries.
“South Africa is still facing huge socio-economic problems and focused work needs to continue in building the rainbow nation.
“Everyone in Sinn Féin was extremely saddened when Mandela passed away in December, as was evident in our strong tribute to Mandela and solidarity with the ANC at our Ard Fheis three weeks ago.
“I look forward to continuing to build our working relationship with ANC and constructing even closer ties between Ireland and South Africa”
Lynn Boylan said:
“Today’s meeting with the African National Congress was particularly poignant with the passing of Madiba just a few months ago.
“It was also a great opportunity to note the positive work of the ANC Women’s League in campaigning against domestic violence and for the economic and social rights of South African women and their children.”
