Voluntary/community groups tackling suicide need properly resourced – Jennifer McCann

5 March, 2014 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has called on the Executive to resource groups and organisations working in local communities who provide vital support and prevention services to those suffering from the issue of suicide.

Speaking during a visit to the Lighthouse Project in North Belfast the West Belfast MLA said:

“It is well recognised that 70% of people who have died by suicide in the North of Ireland had not been in touch with mental health services.

“This means that many people in a serious emotional crisis are not accessing statutory mental health services.

“They are going to community and voluntary organisations as their first point of call and this illustrates the critical role those groups play in suicide prevention and support provision.

“It is important that that the proper recognition and resources are given to these organisations as they are saving peoples lives by providing a much needed immediate response."
