Minister must ensure that those who killed Irish bred white tailed eagle are held to account – Lynn Boylan

6 March, 2014 - by Lynn Boylan MEP

Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Lynn Boylan has today called on the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to ensure that those who shot and killed one of the only two Irish bred white tailed eagles are held to account.

The young Tallaght woman said:

“Despite the great work of the National Parks & Wildlife Service, breeding white tailed eagles in Ireland remains a very real challenge.

“In July of last year this beautiful white tailed eagle was one of two that had successfully fledged in Ireland for the first time in over 100 years.

“Having been actively engaged with the project to re-introduce the white tailed eagle into Ireland back in 2007 I am absolutely heartbroken by the wanton destruction.

“It is clear now that an education awareness programme is urgently needed and every avenue much be pursued to secure a conviction.

“Years of effort have gone into reintroducing the white tailed eagle into Ireland and if the programme is successful there are a number of benefits for Ireland including tourism and biodiversity.”
