Politics of austerity leading to a rise in neo-fascist groups – Sen. Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

6 March, 2014 - by Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh today called for a debate on the impact of austerity policies across the EU.

Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:

“This is a theme I was discussing in Bilbao over the weekend. The event was a conference which coincided with the visit of the IMF to the city.

“The theme of the conference was the impact of troika economics on states across Europe.

“One of the issues raised by a number of speakers was the rise of neo-fascist groups in Spain and Greece.

“It is important for us not to forget that bailouts are still happening across Europe.

“They are having a massive negative impact in places like Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain.

“Now we hear the troika is coming back to check our copybooks in the near future.

“We were told that we were out of its grasp, but it is clear we are still under its tutelage until 75% of the banking debts are repaid.

“It is important to have a debate on the impact of troika economics and austerity policies throughout Europe.

“Like Ireland, those countries are dealing with serious unemployment and cutbacks in public services.

“It would be a useful debate and a reminder that we must not forget our comrades across Europe.”
