Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has called on people to attend the first conference organised to deal with the intersections between the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community and race, gender, religious, disability and political discrimination.
Ms. Ruane said,
“I am delighted to be able to attend this conference entitled ‘Double or Multiple Struggles to Belong’ organised by the Rainbow Project for March 7th from 11am to 4pm in Unison Building in Belfast.
“People need to realise that the LGB&T community face everyday prejudices such as religious, political, ageism and disability discrimination as much as other sectors of society as well as homophobia.
“It is therefore welcoming to see this conference which will explore equality issues and which will be addressed by stakeholders such as managers, trainers and directors from the public, private, community and voluntary sectors.
“If we are truly to embrace equality in the 21st century then all hate crime and prejudices must be faced down and everyone treated as equal no matter what their individual orientations.”
