Sinn Féin Irish language spokesperson Rosie McCorley MLA has said that Seachtain na Gaeilge is the perfect opportunity to explore the opportunities the language presents.
Ms. McCorley said,
“Seachtain na Gaeilge runs from the 1st until the 17th March and is used to promote the Irish language.
“I would urge everyone to use the period to explore what the language can offer them as there is so much on offer.
“Whether it is signing up to Líofa with a view to becoming fluent, or just learning a ‘cúpla focal’ which is a couple of words to use with friends the language is so rewarding.
“The Irish language is very prominent in many of our place names and gives a great understanding as to the origins of those names so even a basic understanding can develop into a worthwhile and interesting hobby.
“There is also drama, music, book clubs, after school events, concerts, debates and poetry hosted through the medium of Irish
“Events during Seachtain na Gaeilge is happening right across the North and I would encourage people to search out one that suits them and give the language a try.
“More and more people are now learning the language so this is an opportunity for everyone to make an effort and use whatever Irish they have whether they have a cúpla focal or are Líofa in bringing the language to life.”
