Sinn Féin’s EU candidate for Ireland South Liadh Ní Riada has said that common sense must prevail regarding the status of family members under tax rules for childminders.
Ni Riada said:
“Forcing family members such as grandparents, who look after their grandchildren in their homes, to fill out a 26 page tax return form, will cause headaches for a great number of working parents.
“In light of the very high costs of childcare in this country, many parents rely on other family members to look after children while they are out earning a living.
“To undermine the spirit of that relationship, by forcing family members to wade through a quagmire of bureaucracy, would be fairly ridiculous. Family members should be given additional help and assistance where required and they should not be overburdened when trying to help. Common sense must prevail.
“Furthermore, the Government needs to work toward reducing the exorbitant costs of childcare in this state and support extended family members that are going the extra mile to look after children during this serious economic crisis.”
