Serial complaints by unionists only wasting public money - Gerry Kelly

11 March, 2014 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said unionists are wasting public money with a series of fruitless complaints in the Assembly.

His comments come as the Sinn Féin MLA welcomes the finding by the Commissioner for Standards and the Committee on Standards and Privilege that he did not breach the MLA code of conduct when he gave a speech in Castlederg last year.

The North Belfast MLA said:

“I welcome the fact that both the Commissioner and the Committee on Standards and Privileges have not upheld the complaints by Jim Allister and Tom Buchanan.

“Serial complaints to the Commissioner and the Committee by unionists, in order to achieve a headline, is clearly ramping up significant cost to the public purse and achieving nothing.

“This 97 page report was a waste of peoples time and public money. The right to free speech is protected by the European Convention on Human Rights and unionist MLAs should cease these fruitless and costly antics.”
