O’Dowd decision on exams and grading welcomed
Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard has welcomed today's statement from Minister John O'Dowd retaining both the current grading system and choice in the type of examinations available to schools.
Speaking in the Assembly, Mr Hazzard said:
"The recent review of GCSEs and A-Levels has resulted in 49 recommendations, which will ensure that our examinations and qualifications will be accepted across the board,” said Chris Hazzard.
"The Minister’s decision to retain the current grading system and the availability of both linear and modular examinations illustrates that the Minister continues to protect the opportunities of all pupils.
And Mr Hazzard said the minister’s commitment to work with teaching representatives was the way to go.
"We need to continually explore ways in which the approach to assessment can be refined so that the education system delivers better results for all our children,” he said.
"The voice and experience of our teachers and school leaders is central to this.
“Therefore I welcome the Minister's commitment to work with teaching representatives in an effort to further develop and enhance the quality of education."
