Sinn Féin Dublin EU candidate Lynn Boylan has welcomed the news that peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy is to be released from prison on the 22nd of March.
D'Arcy, who suffers from cancer, was convicted in relation to trespassing on the runway at Shannon Airport in protest at the use of the airport by the US military en route to wars in the Middle East.
Speaking today, the young female candidate said:
“I am delighted that Margareta D’Arcy has finally been given a release date, but the bottom line is that she should never have been imprisoned in the first place.
“Jailing an elderly peace activist, who is receiving treatment for cancer and suffers from Parkinson’s disease is not something that any reasonable person could view as being just.
“For over a decade now, the US military have been passing through Shannon Airport. As a peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy has simply given expression to the public opposition to the use of Irish Airports for the purposes of US foreign policy, and its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“Rather than addressing these issues, the state has focused its efforts on arresting and jailing a 79-year-old woman.
“Margaretta is not a criminal. She represents no threat to the public and it is outrageous that she was ever imprisoned. “
