Support for Western Trust non-smoking policy

12 March, 2014 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin MLA and chairperson of the Health Committee Maeve McLaughlin has welcomed the decision by the Western Trust to make its sites entirely non-smoking zones.

“I welcome the fact that all sites belonging to the Western Trust including Altnagelvin Hospital are now entirely non-smoking,” said Maeve McLaughlin.

“Smoking is proven to be detrimental to your health and treating the effects of smoking is costing the health service millions of pounds each year.”

Maeve McLaughlin described the move as an important initiative.

“It is therefore important that we move to encourage people to stop smoking and this initiative is a step in the right direction,” said the Sinn Féin MLA.

"I would appeal to health staff, patients and visitors to respect this directive and refrain from smoking on Western Health Trust property.”
