Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Arts, Heritage, Tourism & Sport, Sandra McLellan TD, has urged the Taoiseach to address the State’s housing crisis.
Speaking in the Dáil today, Deputy McLellan said:
“The government must publish the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.
“The state is in the midst of the most severe housing crisis in its history, with 100,000 people languishing on housing lists.
“The Bill must provide a solution to the housing crisis by providing the funding to local authorities to commence a house building programme.
“The private rented sector is not the solution to the current housing crisis. It has not delivered an adequate number of homes, has failed to offer protection to tenants and only lead to economic unsustainability.
“Local authorities should build an adequate supply of housing that is maintained and owned by councils at an affordable rent to the public.
“I hope this housing bill will be part of that solution.”
