Legal proceedings against RVH point to need for urgent change – Maeve McLaughlin
Sinn Fein MLA Maeve McLaughlin said the news that legal proceedings have been brought by a senior consultant and a patient against the RVH is unprecedented and very worrying.
The Foyle MLA and Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:
“This unprecedented action by a senior consultant and a patient is clearly very worrying and points to the already generally accepted view that our A&E’s, and the RVH in particular, are not providing the type of care the general public are entitled to.
“Sinn Fein have been stating for some time that staff at the hospital are under severe pressure and clearly the system in operation is not working for patients and staff.
“Claims that ‘appalling standards of care and neglect’ plus ‘patients suffering avoidable harm and deprivation of their basic human rights’ will alarm everyone in society.
“Change is needed at the RVH and some form of new system needs implemented quickly so that public confidence is restored in the provision of health care and that when patients enter the hospital they know they are going to get the best care possible.”
