Political unionism and Orange Order quiet on paramilitary display – Gerry Kelly

19 March, 2014 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said political unionism and the Orange Order need to explain why a protest at an interface, which they are associated with, had men in balaclavas driving a military jeep.

The North Belfast MLA’s comments came after the military style jeep was driven by masked men in military fatigues at the Twaddell protest at the Ardoyne interface last night.

Gerry Kelly said:

“Both political unionism and the Orange Order, which are associated with this protest, need to come out and explain why a military jeep driven by men in balaclavas was at the protest.

“This protest is at an interface clearly for the reason to stoke up inter-community tensions. The appearance of this jeep driven by masked men in military fatigues is sinister and designed to intimidate.

“It’s time that political unionism and the Orange Order called a halt to this nightly charade and distanced themselves from loyalist paramilitarism which obviously has a huge influence on the protest.”
